Tour de France (Fra): Pogacar on another level

What a first week of the Tour de France! If it was Mathieu Van Der Poel who illuminated the first part of the race with his class, winning in particular the second stage and wearing the leader’s jersey for six days, it was the defending champion Tadej Pogacar who quieted all debates about who is the strongest. Winner of the stage 5 time trial in Mayenne, the Slovenian hit nearly a knockout blow in the first mountain stage, the finish of which was at Le Grand-Bornand. Even Australia’s Ben O’Connor’s victory the next day in Tignes couldn’t change anything. After nine stages, the UAE Team Emirates rider is already 2’01” ahead of the AG2R CITROËN rider, and 5’18” ahead of Colombian Rigoberto Uran. The second part of the Tour promises to be exciting!

The general classification: 1. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) ; 2. Ben O’Connor (AG2R CITROËN TEAM) ; 3. Rigoberto Uran (EF Education Nippo)

Stages won by: Julian Alaphilippe, Mark Cavendish (Deceuninck Quick Step) ; Mathieu Van Der Poel et Tim Merlier (Alpecin Fenix) ; Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) ; Matej Mohoric et Dylan Teuns (Bahrain Victorious) ; Ben O’Connor (AG2R CITROËN TEAM)

Giro d’Italia Internazionale Femminile: Van Der Breggen again in control

The Trek Segafredo Team won the inaugural time trial between Fossano and Cuneo, allowing American Ruth Winder to don the first leader’s jersey. But the very next day, Anna Van Der Breggen reminded everyone that she was indeed the strongest rider at the Giro. The Dutchwoman, and double World Champion last year in ITT and road race, won the second stage solo with a 1’22” lead over her SD Worx teammate Ashleigh Moolman. Already a triple winner of the Giro Rosa (2015-2017-2020), Van Der Breggen seems to have taken a serious option on a 4th victory.

The general classification: 1. Van Der Breggen (SD Workx); 2. Ashleigh Moolman (SD Worx) ; 3. Demi Vollering (SD Worx)

Stages won by: Trek Segafredo ; Anna Van Der Breggen (SD Worx) ; Marianne Vos (Jumbo Visma)

Tour de France (Fra): Van Der Poel makes history

Could there be a stronger symbol? Mathieu Van Der Poel, 26 years old and racing his first Tour de France, succeeded where his grandfather Raymond Poulidor had always failed: taking the yellow jersey. The day after Julian Alaphilippe‘s victory in the first stage, the Dutch rider won at Mûr de Bretagne in a way that also earned him the yellow jersey. Inevitably, the first thoughts of the Dutch champion were for his grandfather the French hero, who died in November 2019. After three days of racing, Alpecin Fenix, which is racing the Grand Tours this year for the first time, won a second stage on Monday with Tim Merlier, who was already a winner on the roads of the Giro this May.

The general classification: 1. Mathieu Van Der Poel (Alpecin Fenix); 2. Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck Quick Step); 3. Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers)

Stages won by: Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck Quick Step); Mathieu Van Der Poel and Tim Merlier (Alpecin Fenix)

Paris-Camembert: Godon does the double

Paris-Camembert, a hilly classic on the French calendar, usually takes place in the spring. But for two seasons, the organizers have done everything to adapt to the current health crisis. After the 2020 edition was held in September, the event was run this year at the end of June. But Dorian Godon does not care about the vagaries of the calendar. After his victory last year in Normandy, the slender rider from the AG2R CITROËN TEAM added a second success in the land of cheese: “We had a great day with the whole team. Geoffrey’s (Bouchard) podium crowns the collective work.” The 25-year-old rider now has four victories among professionals: two at the prologue of the Boucles de la Mayenne and now two wins at the Paris-Camembert. A clear pattern for his palmarès!

The results: 1. Dorian Godon (AG2R CITROËN TEAM) ; Pierre-Luc Périchon (Cofidis, Solution Crédits) ; 3. Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R CITROËN TEAM)

Mont Ventoux Dénivelé Challenges: Miguel Angel Lopez flies up Ventoux

For its third edition, the French event offered a double ascent of Ventoux. And just a few days before the start of the Tour de France (which will take a very similar route during the 11th stage on July 7), Miguel Angel Lopez showed he has sparkling form. The Colombian attacked about ten kilometers from the finish, and no one was able to keep his pace. He won at an altitude of 1909 meters with 2’26” ahead of Oscar Rodriguez. “The whole team worked really well today. I’m happy to get a victory on such an important summit. In July, I hope my body will remember this day.”
